Playa
Blanca Lodge is nestled on a private
beach between Ascension Bay and Espiritu Santo Bay in the Yucatan peninsula
of Mexico. Its only neighbors are the abundant wildlife that inhabit the
area and the ancient Mayan ruins scattered through the jungle. The small lodge is situated on the southern end of a narrow island that divides Ascension Bay to the north and Espiritu Santo Bay to the south. A vast network of lagoons reaches to the west, isolating the island from inland traffic. In short, Playa Blanca sits alone in the epicenter of one of greatest bay/lagoon systems in the world for bonefish, tarpon and permit -- the Big Three of flats fishing.
Permit and bonefish can be found year round. Permit and bonefish are taken from the skiff or by wading mile upon mile of hard sand. Tarpon are caught throughout the year, but May and June are best for tarpon. Limited numbers of snook have been taken from the numerous mangrove lagoons and brackish estuaries. The remote Yucatan lagoons provide some of the best fishing in the world for immature mangrove tarpon, and Playa Blanca has this potential almost literally at its back door; the docks for the Santa Rosa Lagoon skiffs are within walking distance of camp, just past the ancient ruins of Chac Mool. Bonefish and big barracudas also flourish in Santa Rosa Lagoon. A two hour wade across a shallow cove with firm, hard bottom faced several dozen tailing bonefish. Bahamas
