Since 1960, the Birch Family has been hosting scuba divers, nature lovers and friends at our oceanside retreat, Small Hope Bay Lodge, on Andros Island in the Bahamas. Unspoiled and virtually undiscovered, Andros is a world apart from the crowds.

Andros Island is world famous for its superb bonefishing--per pound, some of the most exciting light tackle fishing there is. There are great schools of them, and thousands of miles of flats. There are tarpon, too. If great reef fishing interests you, grouper school in December and January, followed by mutton snapper in the summer. Dolphin and tuna can also be found.

There are also great guides , who have experience not jut in fishing but in catering to fishermen. They know the waters and their boats are sound and properly equipped. A great lunch is packed for you each day you go out to the flats, and a great dinner is ready when you return.

Each of the 20 cottages is hand-built of coral rock and Andros pine and has the necessary amenities -- comfortable bed, shower/toilet facilities, hot and cold running water, lots of towels, and is decorated in island batik colors. Each is cooled by natural breezes and overhead ceiling fans and each is situated right on the beach, shaded by pines and hugged by the ocean. All are designed with relaxation in mind -- no phones, no TV, no distractions.

Small Hope offers a relaxed resort atmosphere for the rest of the family, too, with a full program of diving and snorkeling. If you don't know how to dive, don't worry--you can learn for free. Two hours of your vacation time and you'll be blowing bubbles with the best of them. Small Hope Bay Lodge has been teaching diving for over 40 years. There are bicycles, a sailboat and windsurfers, a hot tub on the beach, and wine with dinner.

If you choose to stay at Coakley House of Fresh Creek, you'll be offered the elegance of villa living complete with maid and cook service and guide pick-up right from your own private dock. Coakley House is superbly located facing the ocean and the Fresh Creek flats, and is just three miles away from the activities at Small Hope Bay Lodge.
