When I was growing up in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina, my dad was an avid fisherman of the mountain lakes in the area. In later years he began to make trips to northern Florida in pursuit of trophy largemouth bass, and successfully landed a 15 lb. 3/4 oz. largemouth. As I grew older, my dad began taking me with him on these trips. When I I caught my first big fish on one of those trips, a 10 lb. largemouth, my love of big fish was born. We fished with our cousin, Charles Massey, was a guide in Orange Springs, Florida and has guided many areas in Florida over the years. He started fishing for Tarpon after he had done about everything Florida largemouth bass fishing had to offer, including landing two fish over 14 lbs. He began to encourage me to experience Tarpon fishing. I went to Marathon in the middle Keys, where he was living, for my first taste of Tarpon fishing. At the time we fished under the bridges, and that's where I hooked up with the "Silver King" for the first time. I could not believe the power and beauty of this magnificent fish! I wanted more! After that, I made a trip to Homosassa Springs where Charles had been a guide for many years. That trip that has since become an annual pilgrimage for me. When I began Tarpon fishing I had no idea how to throw a fly and had never seen Tarpon so closely before. I was given a spinning rod and told not to let anyone see it for fear of the scorn we would have to endure from the guides, some of whom have since become friends. I hooked up that year and the next year I was back and throwing the fly. I have not touched a spinning rod in the presence of Homosassa Tarpon since that time. That first trip to Homosassa was 7 years ago, and it ruined the rest of my fishing! After catching a 140- lb. Tarpon, smallmouth bass is just filler. I still fish the lakes and streams of my youth, I even guide the beautiful streams that are in this area, but it is all filler until I can get back on the salt. I can relate to all of you who are having daydreams about Bonefish in the Bahamas, Tarpon on fly, or whatever other fishing your heart craves..
